Less Red Tape for Federal Jobs

I read with interest and delight the recent blog post from JobinME.com (Maine for those who don’t get it) and with their permission I am reposting the entire content today. This is great news.

Job Seeker Bright Spots – Less Red Tape for Federal Jobs

By Margaret Hansen, JobsInME.com

Have you ever considered working for the federal government? It might be a good time to do so.

Simplified Hiring Process

Federal agencies have until November 1, 2010 to implement a long list of hiring changes that are meant to simplify the process for job seekers, provide a smoother process overall and keep better track of HR files, mirroring the private sector in many ways.

As of December 2008, the federal government employed more than 15 million people.

Coming Changes

As a job seeker, here some of the changes you might notice:

  • Applicants no longer need to respond to essay-style questions when submitting their initial application
  • Applicants can submit resumes and cover letters or complete simple, plain language applications
  • Faster hiring time for mission-critical and commonly filled positions
  • Being notified about the status of your application at key stages of the process
  • More diversity in the federal workforce
  • More effective career pathways for college students and recent grads
  • Easily understood job announcements
  • A new public federal HR website

Category Rating

Other behind-the-scene changes include switching from a “Rule of Three” approach – in which managers picked the top three candidates based on a score – to a “Category Rating” approach, which now allows for final candidate selection from a larger number of qualified candidates.

Thank you and good hunting
