How to write a resume – Objective Statement

The Objective Statement is positioned at the top of the resume, occupying prime position (or real estate), and is typically not more than one sentence. A short sentence will only include the position or type of position you’re interested in.

A longer sentence can include a short list of two or three of your skills, in addition to the position you’re interested in. The longer objective statement is used instead of a summary statement (though a short style objective statement can be used with a summary statement).

The Objective statement is especially useful when using a functional or hybrid resume layout.

When constructing your objective statement, make sure it matches the needs of the position. If you’re using the resume as a marketing tool, you will need to create a balanced objective statement that is broad enough to apply to the areas you need, and narrow enough to still define what you’re looking for. Remember people get hired to do something, not anything !

  • Simon,

This is a wonderfully practical series of illustration for those needing a good, solid model.

Since I do mid-career and executive assessments, I don’t get involved in the resume step. I’m recommending your site to two clients. Keep up the fine work.
